In a previous post, I suggested that sincere devout people, conservative Christians for the most part and predominately supporters of Republican candidates, have been and are being cynically used for partisan purposes. An example of this manipulation could be found in the alleged “War on Christmas” discovered and promoted by commentators on Fox News.
Another area surrounds the idea of marriage between individuals of the same sex.

What has the world come to? I am defending the actions of a conservative Republican!

Actually, she suggests, in keeping with her usual sexual hang-ups, that

I have written in the past about how sincere devout people, conservative Christians for the most part and predominately supporters of Republican candidates, have been and are being cynically used for partisan purposes. An example of this manipulation can be found in the alleged “War on Christmas” discovered and promoted by commentators on Fox News.
The latest manifestation of this practice is in the proposal to amend the Florida Constitution to include this provision:

Anita Bryant is, or was, a singer who became the spokesperson for the orange juice marketing industry in Florida. She is best remembered today for her anti-homosexual activities. In 1977, Dade County (Miami) passed a human-rights ordinance that prohibited discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. In response to this, Bryant led a highly publicized campaign to repeal the ordinance. The campaign was waged based on "Christian beliefs regarding the sinfulness of homosexuality" and the perceived threat of "homosexual recruitment of children and child molestation."

The concerns over homosexual recruitment of children inspired the name of Bryant's political organization, Save Our Children. Among Bryant's assertions during the campaign were "As a mother, I know that homosexuals cannot biologically reproduce children; therefore, they must recruit our children" and "If gays are granted rights, next we'll have to give rights to prostitutes and to people who sleep with St. Bernards and to nail biters." ( I hesitate to speculate on Ms Bryant's fearful encounters with either St. Bernards or nail biters.) On June 7, 1977, Bryant's campaign led to a repeal of the anti-discrimination ordinance by a margin of 69 to 31 percent

The “War on Christmas”: A Phony War

December 25th 2007 20:51
Christmas has had a controversial history, often disparaged by religious leaders and manipulated by opportunists.

Bill O’Reilly, John Gibson, Fox News and others can now relax and stand down, As a person of faith, although not a Christian, writing on Christmas Day, I am able to offer, perhaps, a non-passionate and quieter perspective on what some perceive to be a secular and cultural attack in religion and faith. This belief comes from two main sources

Last August 19th, I posted comments in this space, discussing the persons for whom I would gladly vote, if he or she were nominated. Among those persons were Senators Clinton, Obama and Edwards, each of whom would be a fine president and leader. Each of these individuals has chosen to pursue public office, notwithstanding that each could, and with respect to Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Edwards has, earned far more in private endeavors than they could expect from public service. So, since I admire and respect these individuals, I am greatly saddened by the willingness of Senator Clinton’s staff and close friends to take the low road and engage in shoddy tactics.

This is especially true since Senator Clinton appears to be comfortably ahead in most polls and her friend’s attack on Senator Obama was unnecessary and gratuitous

Vision of a Republican Administration

December 11th 2007 14:57
My fellow scribbler, Lester Caudill, has painted a horrid picture of what he anticipates to be the consequences of a Democrat president administration: tax increases, economic recession, soaring unemployment, inflation (in the face of recession), rampant sex in the high schools, an unprecedented increase in abortions, the raping of the military, and, presumably, a ten-fold increase in adolescent pimples.

It will come as no real surprise that I see no such future. But I can show, historically and factually, what has happened in the years where Republicans controlled the Executive and Legislative branches of the Federal government. It has not been pretty

Mitt Romney takes a perilous position.

December 6th 2007 21:50
This morning, Governor Mitt Romney made a speech that had been anticipated as analogous to John Kennedy’s speech reassuring America that, if he (Kennedy) were elected, his being a Roman Catholic would not interfere with his responsibilities as president. There was, at the time, the perceived general “knowledge” that a Catholic could never be elected and that, if a person of that faith were elected, a danger existed that the doctrines of the Church would supersede the interests of the country as a whole.

Governor Romney, being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a Mormon, has been the subject of similar attacks, some evangelical Christians taking the position that Romney wasn’t perhaps a “true Christian” or, in any event, Christian enough

A Rational Gun Control Policy

December 4th 2007 17:42
I have written two articles on the meaning of the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution, the latter noting that, for the first time, the Supreme Court had accepted a case for review that would, perhaps, explain the original attempt of the Amendment. I have received generally complimentary comments on the articles but also a criticism that I had attempted to discuss the legal controversy without stating a position. These comments are correct.

But now I shall

During the presidential debates, primarily on the GOP side, there has been much rhetoric about the treatment of undocumented (a polite term for “illegal”) aliens who are living in our communities. Rudy Giuliani is accused of being mayor of a “sanctuary city”; Mitt Romney, of being the former governor of a state too liberal to enforce immigration laws. Both characterizations are, sort of, true but both fail to address the real issues. Meanwhile Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, in his comprehensive health care proposals would cover illegal aliens; Senator Hillary Clinton states that her proposal would not, at least right away, include such coverage.

I would like to offer this space for a realistic approach to the results (and possible solution) of a lack of immigration policy, direction and enforcement caused by both Democrats and Republicans over the years
