Palin
Our next Vice President
Sarah Palin, I think is a good choice for John McCain as his running mate in the Presidential Election. Jim Stillman contends that this will only strengthen conservative support that McCain already has.

I think that Palin will actually get those conservative voters to actually go vote. From the get go McCain was painted as a Liberal by Conservative Radio. No those conservatives won’t go Democrat. But they may stay home and not vote at all, which is what I was considering doing myself

John McCain has made a surprising choice for his running mate; in so doing he eliminated one of his primary arguments against the Democrats, has managed to lose any chance of picking up votes from disappointed Hillary Clinton supporters and may well have eliminated his chances to be the 44th president of the United States. It has been a test of the greatest creativity among the GOP stalwarts to dream up reasons why the Alaska Governor should be taken seriously.

In the face of all that, Democrats should simply shut up and allow the absurdity of Governor Palin as a serious “next in line to be president” after a cancer survivor in his 70’s sink in

I have been in touch with Tyler Mills, a thoughtful and excellent writer on another site. Tyler, a friend of Randy Inman, a contributor to this blog as well as his own, identifies himself as leaning to the Left (although he doesn’t “lean” as far as I am apt to do. Tyler has tried to register with Orble and has suggested that he post on this blog; I have told him that this blog will welcome people of all political viewpoints, provided that they will accept criticism in good spirits! I understand that Orble has the registration, my invitation to join this blog and so forth. Tyler will, I am certain, be a great asset to these pages.

In the meantime, Tyler is chomping at the bit, as it were. What follows is his initial post’

I have been exchanging comments on Steven Barrett’s blog with a lady who is quite forthright in her condemnation of liberals in general and me in particular. She, at one point, remarked that

I don't usually touch anything by Jim Stillman. He said to Youranter and to me once that he had handled cases for the ACLU. He's an ultra-lib and for some unimaginable reason, proud of it.

I was reading the post by Howard (posted three times!) on being concerned to have Iran retaliate if Messrs. Bush, Chaney and their buddies decide, in the words of the Beach Boys and John McCain, to “bomb, bomb, bomb Iran”.

A while ago, on July 31 of this year if it matters, an article was posted on these pages asking why the media give the Arizona Senator and GOP candidate for president a “free pass”, skipping over both casual mistakes in the Senator’s “off the cuff” remarks but also serious substantive errors. Since I was the author of the article, I cannot praise it without forfeiture of my well earned – and deserved --trait of modesty.

I read with great interest the two posts by Mike Pouraryan on his impression of the Saddleback Forum with Pastor Rick Warren and the comments by Steve Barrett.

Joel Hunter is Senior Pastor at the Northland Church in Orlando, Florida. His congregation is substantial, numbering over 12,000 members. He is a registered and staunch Republican, strongly anti-abortion. He was, for a few minutes, president of the Christian Coalition which has long served as a model for activism for the religious right. After being elected as President of the organization founded by Pat Robinson, Rev. Hunter stepped down, saying the group resisted his efforts to broaden its agenda to include reducing poverty and fighting global warming.

Over the years, he gained a reputation as an evangelical leader seeking to expand the agenda of conservative Christian activists from issues like abortion and same-sex marriage

There are serious problems and much need and unhappiness in the world. To many sincere and good people, prayer is effective in seeking help and solace from the Deity. I remember one of the thoughts of Thornton Wilder in the Bridge of San Luis Rey regarding the role of God in everyday life.

Some say that we shall never know and that to the gods we are like the flies that the boys kill on a summer day, and some say, on the contrary, that the very sparrows do not lose a feather that has not been brushed away by the finger of God

There is a canard going around that suggests that Florida is incapable of running an election without incompetency or outright fraud. I’m not certain if the election of Gov’na of Lutz [pronounced: lootz] thoroughly refutes that position, or reinforces it, but you can be the judge.

Here is an election where votes are openly purchased; the elected Guv’na swears to declare independence from Hillsborough County, the State of Florida, the United States and everyone else. All of this happens in a small but proud community a cow chip’s throw north of Tampa

There simply have to be minimum standards for expressing political views, standards that if one repeatedly violates, causes even the most ardent supporter to protest and become ill. SL has brought political discourse to a level that stops all discourse.

Quite often, the material is false and has been thoroughly discussed at Snopes or elsewhere. At no time has SL acknowledged the true facts

The latest SL rant, referring to me but omitting my name, suggests that I take advantage of my co-contributor, Randy, to give the false impression that I am "fair and balanced" (that's original!) while all the time I am really a liberal. My goodness, I thought I had made my political views rather clear -- even SL can understand them. I am a liberal, but welcome the views of those opposed because only by exposure to contrary opinions am I able to confirm and develop my beliefs. And modify them.

Meanwhile, I came across this parody of a GOP political ad that I have to share. It's from the Funny or Die site

Why some Christians hate Gay People

August 10th 2008 00:02
Ok you Christians please read this part very carefully. I do NOT mean to offend you by any means. I am simply throwing out some observations I have made about why some Christians hate gays.

First about my own beliefs. I am agnostic but often with Christian leanings. I enjoy listening to Gospel Music (the old stuff- Hymns) and even attend a Baptist Church from time to time. The main reason I am not a full on believer is the science of the matter. I envy you your faith, I really do

What is a Liberal?

August 9th 2008 19:44

What is a Liberal? Well in this post I will try to answer that by what the word means to me. And I know a blanket statement about all Liberals isn’t wise. And of course all Libs are not like this, completely anyway

It seems that she has posted comments about Senator Obama’s remarks to a child as to why he wanted to be President.

Barack Obama has done it again, folks. Surprise, surprise... When asked by a seven year old child why he wanted to be president, he said it was because he thought that America wasn't as good as it "used to be." Makes you wonder which "good old days" he meant, doesn't it?

Paying the bill for Iraq

August 8th 2008 18:45
According to David Morris, who has been embedded in Iraq as a reporter for the Virginia Quarterly Review and Salon, as of March, 2008, the cost of the Iraq war to the American taxpayer has been $4,563.18, per second! I’ll leave it to the math majors to compute the cost overall since the start of the exercise. Suffice it to say, it’s a hell of a lot of money.

We could have put this money to good use here in the United States. Imagine if you will, the same money rebuilding our roads, bridges, school buildings rather than spending the vast sums on building an infrastructure in Iraq. New Orleans is still not restored following Katrina, the mid-west is still recovering and rebuilding following the flooding of the past year, Florida and other states suffer from a real foreclosure crisis, our teachers are underpaid and our municipalities broke

America
Save the United States, make me King!
Here are the things I would do to fix America if I were suddenly named King. I don’t mean President as that isn’t enough power for me. I would need much more power to fix the United States, but fix it I would. Feel free to post your fixes in the comments section.
