It is 12:30 P.M. on Friday, October 24, 2008, and Joan and I have voted for the man who will be our president for the next 4 or 8 years. At this time, I obviously do not know who will be taking over for George W. Bush next January, except I am certain that:
• He was elected by the American people in a country where elections are robustly contended and fairly resolved;
• In the next 4 (or 8) years, he will be challenged and tested by bad people in the world and in the United States;
• He will do his absolute best to respond to those threats;
• He is a just, patriotic, honorable man and to suggest otherwise is foolish, unsupportable and indecent;
• The pressures of the job will be greater that had been anticipated; and
• He deserves the absolute and unwavering support of the citizens in his endeavors – each of us retaining the right to believe him in error.
He is my president and yours.
Because I am always positive and sometimes correct, I propose the following Amendment to the Constitution, effective at the instant the identity of the new president is determined, either on November 5, 2008, or upon the voting in the Electoral College on December 13, 2008, or when the votes are counted in Washington on January 6, 2009.
Two plus years are simply too long.
Now we can all wish the new president well, and may he have strength and wisdom.

Notwithstanding the provisions of the Constitution, the protests of all political parties and cable news spokespersons, political junkies and anyone else, all acts related to holding or seeking public office, campaigns, and soliciting contributions after [pick a date] and before January 1 of the year of the applicable election.
Two plus years are simply too long.
Now we can all wish the new president well, and may he have strength and wisdom.
