Gun Safety Training Should Be Mandatory In Schools

When I was telling a little about myself in an earlier post, I said gun safety training should be mandatory. I want to expand on that a little bit. And I will tell a little about my own experiences with guns.
I grew up and still live in a rural area, the sound of shooting was nothing to hear around us. Interesting side note, the only time I ever heard anyone get shot, I somehow knew it wasn’t target practice. It was a road rage incident where both parties pulled off the road right above my house. The victim drove himself to the hospital and fully recovered.
I think I first shot a gun at around 10 years old and by 12 I had several of my own. My dad spent an afternoon showing me gun safety. My 12 year old has been given the same lecture although he has only been shooting one time.
Not too long ago the son of one of my friends took a gun from home and went to a neighbor’s house. Not having had much in the way of gun safety training, he promptly shot a hole in his friend’s wall! Nobody was hurt but it could have been tragic.
I have guns and kids in my home, but my ammunition is stored well away from them. The only one I keep loaded is a handgun with a trigger lock. The key to the lock is located only where I or my Fiancé knows.
Every once in a while we hear about some kid visiting a friend’s house, picking up a gun and accidentally killing somebody with it. Usually this kid has never been around guns and has no idea what can happen.
If gun safety training was mandatory in schools this would seldom ever happen again. I know you gun haters are not enjoying the thought of your kids touching a bad ole gun. Well guess what guns are tools just like a hammer. A gun won’t leap up and commence to shooting unless somebody pulls the trigger.
Even if you never had a gun and would never buy one, your kids should be exposed to gun safety training. If your child visits a home where a stupid parent has guns stored unsafely, there could be a tragic incident. But if all kids had mandatory gun safety training, they would know how to handle a gun. Or even better they would know to leave it alone. And any parent who stores guns and ammo where kids can get to them should be jailed.
