Socialized Medicine

July 13th 2008 00:50
In talking with Jim Stillman about this article, he suggested I try to define socialized medicine. To me it means ran by the government and paid for by the government (our taxes of course) and to me it means shoddy work in the health care field.

According to this article on Wikipedia the term can mean different things in different countries. I recommend reading it and I usually don’t use that site as a source for articles or blog posts.

I am against socialized medicine in the United States, partly for political reasons but mostly for my health. The government controls too much already and screws it up at that. They blatantly robbed Social Security and ran it into the ground.

The Government would soon decide who deserved what treatment and when. There would be so much red tape that hospital emergency rooms would bog down even worse than the disgrace that they are now.

Socialized Medicine would be one more step down the path to hell, er Communism. Government should be here to serve us not control every thing in our lives. While they joyfully destroy our economy they will expect the taxpayers to pay for the socialized medical system. Can’t pay taxes if you don’t have a job.

The health care would go down the tubes in a socialized medical system. I remember when I went to Lamaze class before my son was born. There was a Finnish couple in the class. They had come to America and paid for prenatal care and the birth of their baby, out of their own pocket. They said Finland had free health care but that it was shoddy at best with poor health care and long lines.

The Government would pay health care professionals next to nothing and you get what you pay for. We already have shortages in certain nursing fields and that is with decent pay and benefits.

The reason we have cruddy teachers in the United States is the pay scale. The smartest and most hard working of our population, go for higher paying jobs. It is only natural to do so. And the best and brightest will no longer suffer through medical school for low pay and long hours.

Not only health care will suffer, but also research in the medical fields for new drugs or treatment will as well. So you will not see the newest wave of miracle drugs or it will be reduced to be sure. I know some people are dedicated to helping others, and would be health care providers for free. But they are few and far in between.

Soon very soon when the government blows the money set aside for the system, you will see cutbacks on procedures. You don’t really need a CAT scan, just tape a aspirin to it and go on home.

You see all over the internet that the United States does not guarantee health care for it’s citizens. Bull Hockey! By law anyone seeking treatment in a hospital MUST be treated no matter their ability to pay. Which is a big reason why hospital bills are so expensive, we pay for those who did not. But we would be doing the same thing with our tax money. At least now some of the people have their own insurance or just pay their bill. We also have Medicaid and Medicare which are not perfect but are sure better than nothing.

To sum it up socialized medicine in the United States should be about as welcome as a social disease! And to tell a little about me, I don’t have insurance and I have not been to a Dr or ER in over 3 years because I can’t afford to go, and luckily have been able to overcome anything that may have sent me there. That being said I still don’t think socialized medicine is the answer. Now if the Government wants to step in and help with insurance and let us pick the Hospital or Dr to see, then I am all for it.

When American medicine is good, it's very, very good. Up there with the best in the world. But . . . . .
Healthcare in America is more expensive than anywhere else in the world.
Healthcare for people who aren't rich is no better than most third-world countries.
The American system has been shown to be the least efficient and most wasteful compared to any national health or hybrid scheme anywhere else in the world.
Healthcare is rationed by some means or other everywhere - in the US, by what you can afford, in, say, the UK, according to the need and the available public funding. Neither system is perfect, but I know which I prefer - to have to wait a while for care, or to be unable to ever get it at all because I'm too poor.
Here in Australia we have both systems running side by side: publicly funded if you need it, private if you can afford it.
It's not perfect - in the last ten years too much money has been diverted to the private sector by the government, and not enough to the public sector, meaning poor folks waiting too long for essential treatment.
The way it mostly works is that folks who can't afford private health insurance do get treated eventually, although not soon enough: those who can afford it don't have to wait, and don't clog up the public hospitals.
Like I said, it's not perfect, but it's better than being all one or the other.

My daughter and son-in-law, both physicians (and good ones, too), would agree with most of what you write. I would argue a number of points -- and will so so shortly.
