The government we deserve.

September 13th 2008 14:06
Thomas Jefferson said, “The government you elect is government you deserve.” H.L. Mencken agreed, with a sardonic edge, "People deserve the government they get, and they deserve to get it good and hard."

The willingness of the American public to be tricked by the group that gave us, and the world, the inattentiveness and buffoonery of George Bush is carrying the day.

Whether you are Democrat, Republican, liberal, conservative, religious, secular or something in between, all Americans must acknowledge that this nation has serious problems that must be addressed in a serious manner. Our foreign policy and our relations with allies and opponents are in tatters; the Federal Reserve, and the collective experience of the average person on the street, shout that our economy is in distress; our educational system has not been adequate in relation to foreign schools; we are engaged in two major wars and, in addition, threatened by terrorist cells and groups, we have surrendered our basic freedoms and rights under the Fourth Amendment; we have engaged in torture; spying on our citizens is accepted as is “rendering” alleged adversaries to foreign bases and locations where a failure to act decently is a hallmark and the list of problems goes on.

For the time being, ignore how these events and deficiencies came about; I would suggest that it was the ineptitude of the Bush (43) administration; others blame the pervasive nature of lobbyists in Washington and still others, liberal Democrats and the lack of prayer in the classrooms. It doesn’t matter! What does matter is that our leaders on both sides of the aisle should be explaining their respective concrete plans to address and fix the problems.

Instead, what do we get? Phony indignation about lipstick on a pig; accusations that Senator Obama wants to teach children how to have sex before learning how to read; claims that the Illinois Senator is a Muslim and comes from a family of traitors and terrorists; assertions that the Democratic nominee is guilty of actual treason; all to the end that this garbage is the sole political news on television, talk radio and the newspapers.

Senator Obama has, to his credit, called for a serious discussion on how the real issues can be addressed and solved. Senator McCain has also made similar remarks, all the while allowing his party and supporting 527 groups to employ mean-spirited untruthful attacks; the GOP continues to take the low road and gutter politics just as Karl Rove had engineered in the past.

Senator Obama has been calm and cerebral when he should be yelling at the top of his voice, “I’m mad as Hell and I’m NOT going to take it anymore!”

In 1988, Michael Dukakis was asked, "Governor, if Kitty Dukakis [his wife] were raped and murdered, would you favor an irrevocable death penalty for the killer?" Dukakis replied coolly, "No, I don't, and I think you know that I've opposed the death penalty during all of my life," and explained his stance. The lack of passion resulted in a substantial loss of public support and, possibly the election. What should the Governor have answered? He should have said that he would want to kill the s.o.b. with his own hands, but that was the reason victims of crime and their families do not mete out punishment.

Barack Obama would be a far better president than a John McCain who has become a sycophant of George Bush but unless he gets angry and demands the attention of the voters, he may not get a chance to prove it. And George Bush and the neo-cons will have won a third term.

Jim I disagree with you John Sidney McCain would make a much better president than Barack Hussein Obama. Barack has no experience other than being a community organizer, and running for president for the past year and half.

John McCain has spent his life fighting for America, Barack has spent his life fighting for Barack, and his career. I will be more at ease with someone I know cares about our Country rather than self.

No one can truthfully say John McCain is not a honorable man, and when John and Barack are compared together John's record is far more powerful and his experience is much greater, liberals don't like John McCain for one reason and one reason only he has the word Republican before his name.

John McCain is a independent thinker while Barack sticks to the democratic talking points and is afraid to voice any other opinion other than George Soros, and moveon.org.

Jim do you support moveon.org, and George Soros? Because that is what we will get with Mr. Obama. So you think we deserve radical leftest government Jim?

Jim,

I agree. Things need to get shifted to the issues and the solutions they have planned for them. Unfortunately the GOP has to try and avoid the issues as much as possible because their plans will be strikingly similar to the current plans in place. It will be nothing new, other than of course drilling in Alaska for oil and natural gas once they get Polar Bears removed from the endangered list, and a further attampt to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Lester?

Just the sheer fact that whenever you refer to the candidates you must say "John Sidney McCain" and Barack Hussein Obama" screams that you could care less about the issues, and buy into eveyrthing you hear. This leads you to use a person's name as a strike against him.

His father was Kenyan, he was named after his father. Get over it. He was born in Hawaii, where his father the Kenyan attended school (as did his mother)

I wonder how many people that like to use his middle name all the time realize his mother was born in the heartland of America... Kansas? Get past a name...move on to what they can accomplish for America.

Hey Two Guys Sports are you ashamed of Barack Hussein Obama's full name does it make him something he isn't. I am fully aware of his mother, his grandmother. I wonder are you fully aware of his politics, such as supporting communist ideas, killing unborn babies, destroying our Military, and defense of this country?

Are you aware that he doesn't know how many states there are in the United States of America? Are you aware he is friends with a terrorist named Bill Ayers.

Barack Hussein Obama doesn't want to talk issues, he hides from them, and the liberal press helps him.

A typical belligerent Republican response.

Let’s get over the name garbage once and for all. Or be consistent.

Governor Palin’s middle name is Louise, obviously because in the movie, Thelma & Louise, Louise kills a man and then embracing her girl friend, commits suicide. Her husband, Todd, has a middle name also: Mitchell. He was, no doubt, named for Sharon Mitchell, a well known lesbian porn star whose claim to fame is an ability to perform acts that would require a “mature” tag on this comment.

By the way, First Dude (his expression) Todd was, from 1995 through 2002, not a registered Republican. He was registered as a member, and was active in the affairs of, the Alaska Independence Party which advocates a state vote which includes several options, including increased state autonomy, territorial status, becoming a separate nation or commonwealth state, the possibility of joining Canada.

The founder of the party, Joe Volger, on the party’s website, is quoted: "I'm an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her damned institutions."

And this all makes as much sense as repeated use of Senator Obama’s middle name!

lol Jim,

Good points.

The AIP thing should get more press too. The party said something like well he was still a republican just joined another party for a time.
Well yeah, but when a Republican joins the Democratic party or vice versa - they are no longer the previous, and you can't be both at the same time. Well unless you are Joe Leiberman. Plus it was a party that only wants to do something that hasn't been done since the Civil War - have a state secede from the Union. Add that to the fact that Sarah Palin was born in Idaho (another state that has people trying for secession) and you have the makings of a nice made up conspiracy. Imagine if she were a Democrat, the Republicans would have some entertaining stories made up by now.

I still think claims that Obama is a Muslim are absurd. I think he is an atheist myself. Concerns about his domestic terrorist connection are what people should be addressing, not his religion.

Jim

The arguments are starting to get a bit silly as they always do as election day draws near. It should be about policy position rather than personal insults. Unfortunately, politicians no matter what side, steep to the lowest when things get close.

Go for whoever will do best and forget the baggage. It doesn't matter if it is a woman or a man, a black person or a white person or someone who is old or young (young in this instance is a 40 something).

Who is best and best for all is what it amounts to. That's far more important than any comments about lipstick on a pig or any of the other ridiculous things the media want to report on.

The problem is that there are so many idiots who will vote according to the names and insults tossed about....perhaps today's reminder of the fact that the neo-cons have pushed the economy to the edge of a cliff will refocus the debate. Oh, who am I kidding..this is America - if a person is such a dimwit that they will support Palin-McCain, there isn't much hope of bringing reason to them....and the fact that so many of them reside in my country does indeed bring me to feel "ashamed."
