The upcoming clash of points of view

May 29th 2009 19:50
I am posting this to let the 7 people in the world who, if they do not actually agree totally with me on all issues, political, economic and social, are at least prepared to hear me out.

Starting next week, SL and I will be engaged in a debate-discussion. Damo is going to moderate and keep us honest.

The topic, selected by SL at my invitation, will be possibly the most divisive issue in America today, abortion.

I have no expectation of convincing SL that abortion is an absolute civil right; I don't believe that for a moment. I appreciate the fact that many people of faith hold that there are virtually no circumstances when abortion is not a mortal sin.

On the other hand, we live in a puralistic nation.Last month, the President said:

"One of the great strengths of the United States," the President said, "is ... we have a very large Christian population -- we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation. We consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values."

We must find a middle ground. When I was in law school, a professor said that a perfect settlement of a law suit was one that left all parties equally unhappy.

Maybe we should try and find that middle ground while not interference with an individual's personal beliefs.

A debate with SL? You're braver than I am. I will be following with interest.

Jim, I wish you well, I know you will present things good, although I think you will find the mindset of your opponent far to rigid to engage in real debate that aims to find common ground.

Jim, have fun! Off topic - where did that quote come from. My son was trying to find a text version of that speech because some of his friends were up in arms about "we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation" --- they took that out of context and made it sound as if Obama was denying Christianity. The full quote, as you gave it, tells a much different story - one that is quite true of our nation. Christians (I am one, but don't like to associate myself with mainstream Christians) tend to forget that, wanting to instead consider us to be a Christian nation.

For the debate, remember that not all people of faith (even Christian faith) "hold that there are virtually no circumstances when abortion is not a mortal sin." Some of us are much more tolerant of others' beliefs and circumstances.

Good luck!

I have two versions, one from a press conference held in Turkey and another, expanded, which includes commentary on CNN,

[HTML3456] <object width="320" height="265"><param name="movie" Really Long Link name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed Really Long Link type="application/x-shockwave -flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="320" height="265"></embed></object> {/HTML]

The President’s full statement, without all of the commentary:

[HTML3456] <object width="320" height="265"><param name="movie" Really Long Link name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed Really Long Link type="application/x-shockwave -flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="320" height="265"></embed></object> [HTML]

I hope I have that correctly done.

If this doesn't work...

The President’s full statement, without all of the commentary:

I hope I have that correctly done.

That's better.

I have been thinking of having an open debate in the comments section of an article over at AC or maybe here.

I would post my views and invite Liberals and Conservatives to post theirs. I love debating if there is real debate and not just name calling.

Randy: Sounds like fun. We can speak about how to maximize income for everyone.

More income sounds good. I quit writing about football as much (and it pays well at AC) to do more political crap which pays nothing.

Randy, may I ask what AC is?

AC is Associatedcontent.com where some of us write articles which actually pay as you get published.

SL and I are just about winding down our debate. When the last quetion is asked and answered, sometime next week, I have a suggestion and a request.

Anyone who feels that he or she is more in agreement with me, why not post a comment to that effect on her blog. By the same token, if you feel that I am wrong or missing basic points, post your comments here.

Nothing is more pointless than just hearing from those in agreement!

Agreed.
