The upcoming clash of points of view
May 29th 2009 19:50
I am posting this to let the 7 people in the world who, if they do not actually agree totally with me on all issues, political, economic and social, are at least prepared to hear me out.
Starting next week, SL and I will be engaged in a debate-discussion. Damo is going to moderate and keep us honest.
The topic, selected by SL at my invitation, will be possibly the most divisive issue in America today, abortion.
I have no expectation of convincing SL that abortion is an absolute civil right; I don't believe that for a moment. I appreciate the fact that many people of faith hold that there are virtually no circumstances when abortion is not a mortal sin.
On the other hand, we live in a puralistic nation.Last month, the President said:
We must find a middle ground. When I was in law school, a professor said that a perfect settlement of a law suit was one that left all parties equally unhappy.
Maybe we should try and find that middle ground while not interference with an individual's personal beliefs.

"One of the great strengths of the United States," the President said, "is ... we have a very large Christian population -- we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation. We consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values."
We must find a middle ground. When I was in law school, a professor said that a perfect settlement of a law suit was one that left all parties equally unhappy.

For the debate, remember that not all people of faith (even Christian faith) "hold that there are virtually no circumstances when abortion is not a mortal sin." Some of us are much more tolerant of others' beliefs and circumstances.
Good luck!

The President’s full statement, without all of the commentary:

I hope I have that correctly done.

I have two versions, one from a press conference held in Turkey and another, expanded, which includes commentary on CNN,
The President’s full statement, without all of the commentary:
I hope I have that correctly done.
That's better.

I would post my views and invite Liberals and Conservatives to post theirs. I love debating if there is real debate and not just name calling.

Anyone who feels that he or she is more in agreement with me, why not post a comment to that effect on her blog. By the same token, if you feel that I am wrong or missing basic points, post your comments here.
Nothing is more pointless than just hearing from those in agreement!
